Apple Watch Series 5 can generate an ECG similar to a single-lead electrocardiogram. It monitors your heart rate and lets you know if something is wrong. It helps you keep track of your menstrual cycle and taps you if noise level rises to a point that could damage your hearing. Google Voice Search
Google search will now give feedback on pronunciation. It’s launching a new feature that will let users check their pronunciation of unfamiliar words with the help of machine learning.
When the users speak into their microphone, Google will use AI to analyze how they pronounce the word. They’ll then receive feedback on how each word matches Google’s pronunciation. For the present this feature is available only for American English words, though Google promises Spanish pronunciations are coming.
Google is also improving its word translations and definitions adding visual prompts. If you’re trying to translate “casa” from Spanish to English, for example, you’ll also see pictures of house together with the translated word.
According to Google these picture translations will work initially in English and for the nouns. Let’s hope that it will expand the coverage in the future.
Quantum Computing
IT companies are developing increasingly powerful quantum processors. Last year Intel introduced a 49-qubit chip followed by Google introducing a 72-qubit chip.
Some qubit-based devices can already be accessed through cloud services, such as Alibaba Cloud and IBM Q. The quantum machines of these IT giants help research organizations and universities create complex models that are difficult for classic computers to simulate, for example, the behavior of human immune systems.
At the same time, 2019 may be the year of “personal” quantum machines. In early January, IBM launched Q System One at CES 2019, a prototype commercial quantum computer for business. This is a machine with 20 qubits, which, unlike other quantum computers, can work outside the laboratory.
It is also likely that in 2019 “quantum superiority” will finally be achieved. This is when machines with qubits begin to solve a number of computational problems faster than classical computers.
